IRVINE, Calif. --- Third-ranked UCLA broke open a close game in the second quarter and went on to defeat No. 7 UC Irvine, 18-6, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Anteater Pool Sunday.
UCI had leads of 1-0 after a Trent Baxter goal at 7:16 left in the first quarter and 2-1 following a Mitch Wise penalty shot at the 6:42 mark, but consecutive UCLA goals from Brett Hays, Paul Reynolds and Aimone Barabino gave the Bruins a 4-2 lead that they would not relinquish.
UCLA outscored the 'Eaters 5-1 in the second quarter to lead 10-4 at the break.
Hays, Reynolds and Griffin White scored three goals for the Bruins, who improved to 11-3 overall and 1-1 in the MPSF.
Wise led UCI (12-7, 0-2) with a pair of goals as he leads the team with 52 on the season.
The 'Eaters host Pepperdine Friday night at 7:00 in an MPSF game.
