FULLERTON, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's track & field team had two individuals compete in the hammer throw on the first day of the Ben Brown Invitational Friday at Titan Track Complex.

Junior Barbara Coward had a strong showing in the outdoor season opener, finishing second among NCAA Division I athletes, and third overall, with a toss of 173-09 on her second attempt of the afternoon. She was just over two feet shy of her lifetime-best (176-06), which she established a year ago.

Sophomore Brianna Villanueva added a personal-record 140-05 to place 10th in the Division I standings.

The javelin was also contested on Friday, but the Anteaters did not have anyone entered in that event. They currently sit in fourth place with eight points after two scored events.

UC Irvine resumes action tomorrow with a full day of action slated to start at 9:30 a.m.
