• Women's indoor track & field won their first MPSF Championship in program history with a school-record 132.5 points. The Anteaters had 12 podium finishes, including two individual titles, while they broke three school records at the two-day conference meet in Reno. As a freshman, Joy Anderson was the MPSF champion in the pentathlon where she scored 4,069 points. Senior Jazzmine Davis also took top honors in the 60m hurdles. Davis ran a school-record 8.39 in the prelims. Junior Halle Sutherland topped her own program record in the 200m with a time of 23.97 for a runner-up showing. Kaia Schmidt, Mikah Longcob, Makena Castillo, and Emma Hadley then topped UCI's charts in the distance medley relay at 11:27.62.
• Last week, the place to be was the Bren Events Center. Men’s volleyball hosted UCLA in front a season-high 4,133 fans then men’s basketball entertained UC Santa Barbara on Homecoming in front of a season-high crowd of 4,377. The men’s volleyball crowd was the second largest in program history.
• Men’s basketball enters the final regular season week with a 20-10 overall and 13-5 in the Big West, sharing the top spot with Hawaii. The Anteaters will host Cal Poly Thursday (Mar. 5) at 7:00 p.m. and UC Davis (Mar. 7) Saturday at 5:00 p.m. The finale against the Aggies will be broadcast on ESPNU.
• Last week, Derin Saran scored at the buzzer to beat CSUN 69-67 then UCI out-scored UC Santa Barbara 9-3 in the final three minutes of the game to win 64-60. Jurian Dixon led the Anteaters last week, averaging 13.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals over the two games. Senior Kyle Evans is four blocks shy of tying Mamdou Ndiye's school and Big West single season record of 106.
• Women's basketball (24-5, 15-3 Big West) split their two games last week, defeating CSUN, 60-57, on Senior Night at the Bren Events Center, before falling at UC Santa Barbara, 70-62. Senior Hunter Hernandez moved up to No. 4 in single-season school history with 538 points on the year, while senior Jada Wynn took sole possession of second among UCI's single-season 3-point leaders with 69 triples. The Anteaters enter the final week of the regular season tied for first in the Big West standings with UC San Diego. The 'Eaters are set to travel to Cal Poly (March 5) and UC Davis (March 7).
• UC Irvine remains among the top-10 in all of NCAA Division I women's basketball in free throw percentage (6th, 80.1%), free throws made (6th, 16.9/gm), and field goal percentage defense (10th, 35.3%). UCI also ranks first in the Big West in scoring offense (71.3 ppg) and second in scoring defense (57.4 ppg).
• Men’s volleyball player William D’Arcy led No. 4 UCI with 15 kills in the five-set loss to No. 1 UCLA last Friday. The Anteaters are 12-2, dropping both losses in five sets. Middle blocker Trevor Clark leads the nation in hitting percentage with a .569 mark. UCI will start the Big West schedule hosting UC Santa Barbara on Mar. 11 at 6:00 p.m. at the Bren Events Center.
• Baseball had a busy five-game week going 3-2, but showed out at the prestigious Live Like Lou Las Vegas College Baseball Classic. Friday featured a win over No. 22 and SEC powerhouse Vanderbilt, 9-4, thanks to the pitching efforts of Trevor Hansen and Ryder Brooks. Saturday, the Anteaters downed a previously unbeaten No. 24 Oregon squad started by seven innings of two-run pitching by Ricky Ojeda, and a five-run eighth inning by the offense erasing a two-run deficit to win, 8-6. The weekend ended on a 7-1 defeat to Arizona, but Zach Fjelstad took home All-Tournament honors with six hits and a tournament-best five RBIs on the weekend, part of his 11-hit week with eight RBIs to lead the offense. Next up, another unbeaten team on the horizon traveling to No. 20 USC Tuesday night before opening Big West action at home in a three-game series vs. CSUN.
• Women's water polo (5-11, 1-2 Big West) dropped two close contests last week, falling to No. 5 Hawai'i, 10-9, and coming up short in overtime to No. 16 UC Davis, 16-15, at the Anteater Aquatics Complex. UC Irvine recognized its three seniors, Madi O'Hara, Madeline Kasper, and Charley Birdsall following the game against the Aggies this past Sunday. The 'Eaters will be on the road this week, continuing Big West play at UC Santa Barbara (March 6), before heading to Claremont on Saturday to take on CMS and Arizona State as part of the Convergence Tournament.
• Men's tennis returns to action this week, looking to extend a two-match win streak when they host Villanova today at noon. The 'Eaters then make their way to LMU for an 11 a.m. showdown on Saturday, March 7. Hiroki Sakagawa, who is 4-1 at No. 1 singles, earned his second Big West Player of the Week award last Wednesday (Feb. 25).
• Women's tennis started a five-match week Monday with a 4-3 victory over Bowling Green lifting their winning streak to four matches. Their busy week continues Wednesday against Oakland with first serve at 2:00 p.m. followed by hosting Seton Hall on Thursday, Colorado State on Saturday, and a Tuesday, March 10 vs. Richmond, with all the action coming on campus at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
