Alumni Spotlight: Annie Garrett
10/14/2026
Annie (Mai) Garrett was a member of the UC Irvine women’s basketball team from 2004-08, and still ranks among the Anteaters' top-10 in career assists. After graduating from UCI with a degree in sociology and a minor in education, Garrett joined the girls’ basketball coaching staff at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, where she helped lead the Eagles to the 2010 CIF title. Garrett then returned to UC Irvine, spending six seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater. She went on to earn her Master’s in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia, putting her on the path to her current role as athletic director at SMCHS.
What made you choose UC Irvine?
I chose UC Irvine because it offered a great education while allowing me to stay close to my family and friends. It gave me the best of both worlds: the opportunity to pursue my goals and have the support of the people who mattered most nearby.
What is your favorite memory from your time at UCI?
My favorite part of being at UCI wasn’t a single moment, but the people. The friendships we formed as a team, the daily laughs, the challenges we overcame together, and even the simple moments of living by the beach created memories I’ll carry with me forever. Looking back, it’s those relationships and experiences that made my time at UCI so special.
How did UCI help prepare you for your post-collegiate journey?
UCI gave me the opportunity to grow not only as a student-athlete, but also as a leader. Staying at UC Irvine as a coach after graduation taught me invaluable lessons in mentorship, communication, leadership, and team development. Those experiences helped prepare me for a career in athletic administration. Today, as an athletic director, I have the privilege of leading programs, supporting coaches, and helping student-athletes reach their full potential. Much of the foundation for that work was built during my time at UCI.
What advice do you have for current and future Anteaters?
Take advantage of every opportunity UCI offers and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Some of the experiences that feel small or unexpected at the time can end up having the biggest impact on your life.
Most importantly, invest in the people around you. The relationships you build with teammates, coaches, professors, and classmates can stay with you long after graduation and can shape both your career and your life. Stay curious, work hard, embrace every opportunity, and enjoy the journey. You never know where being an Anteater will take you.
