
UCI Starts Strong at Steve Scott Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's track & field team got out to a strong start on the first day of the Steve Scott Invitational Friday at Anteater Stadium.

Jolie Robinson claimed runner-up honors in the javelin with a personal-record 44.46 meters (145-10). She moved up three spots to No. 3 in program history. Robinson hit her PR on her second attempt of the afternoon to take the lead. In the next round, Hawai'i's Lilian Turban pulled ahead at 45.85m (150-5). Robinson passed on her three attempts in the final.

Reyna Johnson opened the long jump with a big leap of 6.15 meters (20-2.25). That stood as her top mark through the next five rounds as she finished second overall. Kailah McKenzie was also third at 6.00m (19-8.25), while Robinson took fifth at 5.99m (19-8).

DeAna Davis placed third out of 33 in the hammer throw with a toss of 55.77 meters (182-11).

On the track, Malia Gay led wire-to-wire in the 800m Invitational. Gay took the victory with a time of 2:06.67, which was just .46 seconds off her lifetime best. It was her third event win of the season. Luz Mercado added a fourth-place finish (2:08.22).

Maggie Sczupak ran a personal-record 17:23.78 to take third in the 5000m Invitational. Rachel Moen was also 10th at 17:59.62.

In the 5000m Open, Anna Soares placed second with a time of 17:57.30, and Breckyn Kornachuk crossed the finish line in third at 18:21.40.

The Anteaters closed out the evening with three PRs in the mile. Anna Vogtmann clocked in at 4:47.30 to come in fourth in the invitational section. Kaia Schmidt was right on her heels in fifth (4:51.74), while Makena Castillo was eighth (4:57.46).

UCI returns to Anteater Stadium tomorrow for a full dayΒ of events starting at 11 a.m. The 'Eaters will recognize their graduating seniors in a ceremony scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
