MALIBU, Calif. - Sophomore Andy Nguyen took down a ranked opponent in straight sets in the first round of the ITA Sectional Championships Thursday afternoon at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
 
Nguyen upended No. 125 Nicholas Godsick of Stanford, 6-2, 7-6 (5), to advance to tomorrow's Round of 16. It was his second ranked victory of the fall as he also upset No. 52 Iiro Vasa of San Diego at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in October.
 
Nguyen is vying for one of six qualifying bids (semifinalists, two quarterfinal playoff winners) to the NCAA Singles Championship in Waco, Texas, Nov. 19-24. He would join teammate Noah Zamora who already punched his ticket with a runner-up finish at the ITA Southwest Regional.
 
In doubles, No. 90 Hiroki Sakagawa/Noah Zamora fell to UCLA's Gianluca Ballotta/Emon van Loben Sels, 6-3, 6-4.
 
Nguyen will continue singles action against Alexander Hoogmartens of UCLA Friday (Nov. 8) at 12:30 p.m.
