mtrack-2020-seniors

Men's Track & Field Senior Day

Every year at the Steve Scott Invitational, the men's cross country/track & field seniors are honored in front of their friends and family. Unfortunately, that did not get to happen for our 2020 graduating class, but we would still like to celebrate their careers and wish them the best in all of their future endeavors.

Sam Ayala is a four-year member of the UC Irvine men’s cross country and track & field teams. As a junior in 2019, he scored in the 1500m with a fifth-place finish at the Big West Track & Field Championships. He also owned the team’s top times of the season with personal records in the 800m (1:54.00), 1500m (3:48.85), 3000m (8:32.69) and 5000m (14:35.10). As a member of the cross country team, Ayala registered lifetime-bests of 25:10.8 in the 8K and 31:28.8 in the 10K. He had a top-20 showing at the 2018 Big West Cross Country Championships. The Norwalk, Calif., native will be graduating with a degree in economics.

Sam has always been an athlete I have been excited to watch as he has come so far in four years through his hard work and perseverance. He has really come into his own as a distance runner in the Big West Conference and he will very much be missed.

Jhamani Long transferred to UC Irvine from Cerritos College in 2017. As a junior, he had a top-20 finish in the 800m at the 2018 Big West Championships, and ran a season-best 1:56.28 at the Steve Scott Invitational. He missed the 2019 outdoor track & field season with an injury. The Lynwood, Calif., native also competed two years on the UCI cross country team, registering an 8K lifetime-best 26:41.85 as a senior. He is a two-time Big West Fall All-Academic Team selection. A double major, Long will be graduating with degrees in education sciences and sociology.

Jhamani had a rough road of injuries and setbacks, but has been an absolute joy to work with as he displays maturity, leadership and a very strong work ethic. We all will miss seeing his smile from ear to ear around the track.

Evan Singletary has been an integral member of the UC Irvine men’s track & field team over the last four years. He earned all-conference recognition as part of the 4x100 relay that claimed runner-up honors at the 2017 Big West Championships. He also scored in the 100m with a fifth-place finish. The Southern California native ran a personal-record 10.61 in the prelims, which ranks sixth in school history. As a junior, he established a lifetime-best 21.85 in the 200m. Singletary, who has been very involved on campus and in the community since his arrival at UCI, will graduate as a double major in education sciences and social policy & public service.

Evan has been such a tremendous leader both on and off the track with a laundry list of associations, committees, and extracurricular activities that make him so well-rounded. Evan had such a wonderful breakout his sophomore year finishing fifth at the Big West Championships in the 100m. We will really miss his commitment and focus to the program in being the best version of himself for the last five years.

Alan Tantiwassadakran is a three-time Big West qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles. He had a high finish of 13th in 2018. Last year, Tantiwassadakran established a personal-record 14.93 to come in third overall at the UCI Spring Break Collegiate Classic. He also ran a wind-aided lifetime-best 11.26 in the 100m at the Triton Invitational. The Pomona, Calif., native will be graduating with a degree in psychology & social behavior.

Alan has been a student-athlete that has been so much fun to be around and coach as he exudes patience and understanding of his event and our sport. Alan ran into some bad luck at the tail end of his career with injury, but I am excited to see him move on into the world of coaching in which I believe he is very well-suited.

Andres Woodruff is a two-time All-Big West performer in the relays. He was a member of the 4x100 that claimed runner-up honors and the 4x400 that took third at the 2018 Big West Championships. Woodruff is also a three-time conference finalist in the 400m hurdles with a high finish of fourth as a sophomore. Last year, the Los Angeles native came in fifth with a personal-record 52.62. Woodruff will be graduating with a degree in public health policy.

Andres is an athlete that I truly believe has had one of the biggest growth curves on many levels, but for sure as an athlete. Andres has always possessed the intangibles and it is that in which he has found his greatest success as a hurdler. I will miss Andres’ focus and competitiveness the most as he moves onto graduate school.
