DAVIS, Calif. – It took five sets to determine the Big West opener as UC Davis out-lasted UC Irvine, 3-2 (25-15, 24-26, 13-25, 25-15, 15-10) at The Pavilion Tuesday night.

The Aggies (9-5, 1-0) out-blocked UCI (3-10, 0-1) and held a 10-7 ace advantage.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Three Anteaters posted double-figure kills, led by sophomore Abby Marjama with 13 to go with nine digs
>Junior Loryn Carter added 12 kills, while senior Makayla Wolfe hit .526 with 10 kills on 19 swings and no errors. Wolfe had a team-high four blocks
>Libero Erin Alonso had a season-best 11 digs to lead the Anteaters
>UC Davis also had three players in double-digits, topped by Lauren Matias with 18 kills and 13 digs

TURNING POINTS
FIRST SET
>An early 5-1 UC Davis lead was extended to 9-4 on the strength of four service aces
>Another ace in a 6-0 Aggie spurt made the gap, 21-9
>UCD would win 25-15, committing just one error on their way to a .480 (14-1-25) hitting percentage. UCI hit .380 (11-3-21)

SECOND SET
>UCI would separate itself with a 6-1 run to go ahead 17-14. Kills by Marjama and Kiani Stanton plus a block by Makayla Wolfe and Kelly Negron would help the Anteaters in the run
>The lead was short lived as UCD would score four unanswered, three on UCI attack errors to let the Aggies back in front 20-19
>UC Davis would hold a 22-20 advantage before the Anteaters rallied, scoring five of the final six points to win 26-24 on a Loryn Carter kill

THIRD SET
>Two kills by Carrissa MacDonald and two Aggie attack errors gave UCI the 7-3 advantage
>Kills by Carter, Wolfe and MacDonald plus two more Aggie hitting errors put UCI ahead, 14-4
>An ace by Marjama capped a 4-0 run to extend the lead to 24-11
>Following two Davis points, Carter ended the set, 25-13 with a kill

FOURTH SET
>The Aggies would hold an 8-4 lead before three straight kills by Marjama closed the deficit to 8-7
>UC Davis would score three of the next four points to pull ahead 11-8
>The Aggies never lost control winning 25-15 and forcing a fifth set

FIFTH SET
>UCD would score the first three points of the set, forcing an Anteater timeout
>UCI would get on the board on a block by MacDonald and Marjama
>Three in a row by UC Davis extended the lead to 6-1
>Trailing 13-6, Marjama tried to rally the Anteaters with three kills in a row, 13-9
>Out of a Davis timeout, Sophie Wood would have an ace, but it would be followed by a service error and UC Davis block to give the Aggies the set 15-10

NOTES
>UCI goes 1-2 in five set matches this year
>It's the fourth time this season, Wolfe has notched four of more blocks
>Marjama has recorded double-figure kills seven times in 2019
