+ The 'Eaters are outscoring their opponents 10-0 in Sunday matches this season
UC Irvine continued to pepper the back of the net scoring seven times over the weekend to sweep the Fullerton Tournament and put up a second streak of three or more wins.
The 'Eaters kept up with Oregon on Friday equalizing after falling behind 1-0 and 2-1 to bang home the eventual game-winner in the 88th-minute of a nice follow from senior Sammie James to hand the Ducks their first loss of the year, 3-2.
The squad burst out for four goals on Sunday blanking UAB, 4-0, for the team's largest road win since 2011. Four different goalscorers were part of a 28-shot effort against the Blazers while the defense allowed just two attempts and none on target.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
UCI is back on the road for the middle part of five matches away from home beginning Thursday at Idaho State. UCI defeated the Bengals, 3-1, at home last season. ISU is 3-5 so far after earning just one win in 2015. They are coming off a split last weekend at home. Two of its three road matches have been one-goal losses to Boise State and Hawai'i. Freshman Michaela Didericksen has three goals while freshman Brooke Kortekaas and sophomore Nikolina Musto have each put up 20 shots. Junior keeper Shawna Hennings has made 35 saves playing all but 32 minutes in net.
Sunday features a date with Utah, a 4-2 Pac-12 squad whose losses have been shutouts at the hands of top-10 opponents, Minnesota and BYU. Sophomore Hailey Skomoski has shone with five goals to lead the Pac-12, and 13 of her 19 shots on frame. Six total Utes have multiple assists on the year. The stout defense has allowed 15 shots on target total, lowest in the Pac-12, but 40% of those have gone for goals, worst in the conference.
High Flying Weekend
UCI scored seven goals in its two wins at the Fullerton Tournament. The seven are the most in a single weekend since 2010 when it had a nine-goal weekend on two occasions. The team has scored 10 times in its last three matches, the fifth stretch with 10+ in three matches under coach Juniper and first since 2011.
Above and Baham
The best weekend individually belonged to junior Noel Baham who scored twice and assisted on three others for a seven point weekend post at goal and assist each in each match. She was rewarded with her first career Big West Offensive Player of the Week award. It's the first for the team this season, and first since 2014. Baham is the first offensive awardwinner for the 'Eaters since Laura McGrail in late 2013.
Crazy Eights
UC Irvine's 7-1 start is its best through eight matches under coach Juniper. The seven wins through eight contests matches the most for the program with the 1998 squad that went 7-0-1. The team has also deposited 19 goals in its first eight matches, the most since that same '98 squad that knocked 20 home.
Phenomenally Fresh
The 'Eaters are seeing more and more contributions from its freshmen. Maddie Newsom has stepped up in net since the start now with four shutouts and a 0.71 GAA. Jessica Miclat continues to shine having played in all eight matches with seven starts, and on Sunday, she collected her first point and goal, the game-winner to open things up in the 23rd minute. Hayley Mayne has played in each of the last three matches, the first three of her career, and she played 66 minutes over the weekend putting up four shots, one on target. Along with the flood of players that made an appearance on Sunday was freshman Jio Mamola who got her first collegiate minutes adding a shot on goal.
