Andrea Mensen Locks Down Big West Defensive Player of the Week
October 03, 2016 | Women's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine's defensive shutout in the opening week of Big West play lifted Andrea Mensen to Big West Defensive Player of the Week.
The junior spearheaded a backline that did not allow a goal in an unbeaten week of conference action. UCI shutout rival Long Beach State Friday night over 110 minutes to secure a scoreless draw. It continued along into Sunday pitching a second straight shutout en route to a 2-0 victory at UC Riverside.
Mensen and the backline allowed 20 shots total with eight of them on target that were all handled by Maddie Newsom. UCI averages just 3.14 shots on goal allowed per match this season which is the lowest total in the Big West and is thanks in large part to the backline and Mensen.
The award is Mensen's first and the second for the team this season as Mensen joins Noel Baham who took home the offensive honor on September 12. Mensen brings home the defensive honor to UCI for the first time since October of 2014 with Clarissa Robles and Alana Sooy won in consecutive weeks.
UCI is off to a 1-0-1 start in Big West play to go with its 9-4-1 overall record. It currently stands in a tie for second place in conference play, and now wait until October 13 for the team's next match at UC Davis.
