IRVINE, Calif. – The baseball and men's volleyball teams share the Buffalo Wild Wings Anteater of the Week honor after each team knocked off a No. 1 team within an hour of each other last Saturday.
Baseball took down top-ranked TCU 11-2 on Friday behind a strong pitching performance by Louis Raymond then beat the Horned Frogs 6-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Infielder Cole Kreuter was named Big West Player of the Week after hitting .375, with five RBI's and scoring five times over the series.
It was the baseball program's fifth win all-time time against a No. 1-ranked opponent, first since 2011 at Virginia, and first at home since the 'Eaters took the series against Cal State Fullerton in 2006.
Shortly after Saturday's win versus TCU, the men's volleyball team toppled No. 1 Ohio State, 3-0 in Columbus, OH. The win snapped the defending national champions 42-match winning streak.
Setter Michael Saeta was named AVCA National Player of the Week helping UCI to a 3-0 week on the road. The senior recorded a .833 hitting percenatge (5-0-6), 27 set assists, two aces and a season-high eight digs versus the Buckeyes. For the week, Saeta hit .750 with just one hitting error and averaged 10.67 set assists, 1.78 digs, 0.78 aces and 1.44 kills.
Hodges garnered MPSF Player of the Week, averaging 3.67 kills, 4.50 points, 1.22 digs, 0.44 aces and 0.78 blocks per set over three matches last week.
The baseball team, after beating UCLA 5-3 Tuesday night, heads to Seattle U for a weekend series beginning Friday (Mar. 17) at 5:00 p.m.
The volleyball team, ranked fifth nationally, is idle until Mar. 25 when they face Pepperdine on the road.
