STILLWATER, Okla. --- A first-inning run stood up and Andrew Morales pitched a complete-game gem to lift UC Irvine over Oklahoma State, 1-0, Saturday night as the Anteaters won the Stillwater Super Regional and earned a berth in the College World Series.
With the victory, UCI will be making the program's second trip to the Division I College World Series and the first since 2007. Coach Mike Gillespie's 'Eaters will open against Texas next weekend at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. Complete pairings and game times will be announced Monday.
UCI scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the first as Chris Rabago hit a one-out single through the right side and then advanced to second on Connor Spencer's single to right. Jerry McClanahan flied out to left before Jonathan Munoz stroked a double down the left-field line to bring in Rabago.
Morales, who retired the high-powered Cowboys in order over the final three innings, recorded his third complete game of the season in improving to 11-2. He fanned eight, walked two and allowed five hits for the 'Eaters.
Rabago, Spencer and Justin Castro had two hits apiece for UCI, which improved to 40-23 overall.
Vince Wheeland sustained his first loss of the season for Oklahoma State as he fell to 10-1. He went 6 2/3 innings, yielding nine hits and striking out three. Tim Arakawa and Bryan Case each had two hits for the Cowboys, who saw their season end at 48-18.
