Morales, Moore Mow Down Gonzaga In Shutout

Morales posted his fourth quality start and struck out a career-high dozen

IRVINE, Calif. ---Andrew Morales struck out a career-high 12 batters and Sam Moore struck out the side in the ninth as UC Irvine recorded a 1-0 shutout of Gonzaga Saturday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark. UCI climbs to 10-3 on the year while the 'Zags drop to 3-9 overall.

Morales got into early trouble, facing a bases-loaded situation with one out in the first. However, the senior struck out the next two batters he faced to strike out the side and keep the Bulldogs off the board.

Gonzaga threatened again in the fifth, getting a single from Payden Lamb and a base on balls issued to Beau Bozett with one out, but Morales battled and induced a fly ball to center and struck out Cory LeBrun to end the inning.

The Anteaters mounted their own rallies in the second and third innings, putting runners on first and second with two outs but starter Taylor Jones worked himself out of both jams to log three shutout innings.

UCI broke through the scoreless tie in the fourth. Evan Cassolato laced a leadoff triple down the right-field line and scored on a sacrifice to center by Ryan Cooper for the game's lone run.

For Morales, the right-hander yielded just one hit after the fifth and earned his third win of the year while Moore picked up his seventh save and added three strikeouts as UCI posted a season-best 15.

Cassolato and Taylor Sparks led UCI with two hits apiece.

Jones took the hard-luck loss, falling to 1-2 after pitching seven innings and allowing one run on six hits. Lamb and Mitch Gunsolus led thet eam wtih two hits apiece.

The two teams square off Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
