Brock, Moore Shut Out Bulldogs To Salvage Series
IRVINE, Calif. --- Evan Brock and Sam Moore combined to pitch nine shutout innings as UC Irvine posted its first win of the year with a 1-0 decision against Fresno State Sunday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark.
Brock held the Bulldogs to three hits while striking out six and walking two to earn the win (1-0). The right-hander ran into his first hint of trouble in the sixth, giving up a leadoff double to Chris Mariscal. However, after a sacrifice bunt, Brock handled a pop-up by Jordan Luplow and induced a grounder to second to leave Mariscal stranded on third. After facing the minimum in the seventh, Brock handed the ball to Sam Moore, who logged two innings of one-hit relief to pick up the save.
UCI was held scoreless through five and broke through to score the lone run in the sixth inning. Outfielder Justin Castro, who was perfect at the plate with a 3-for-3 day, beat out an infield single to short and took second on the sacrifice bunt from John Brontsema, making his Anteater debut at second. Kris Paulino lined a 1-1 pitch off the glove of diving first baseman, Kevin Viers, that would drive in Castro for the eventual game-winning run.
Fresno State's Jimmy Lambert took the loss after pitching 5.2 innings and striking out four while giving up a run on four hits.
UCI continues its homestand Wednesday against CS Bakersfield at Anteater Ballpark.
