What is NGWSD?

National Girls and Women in Sports Day is an annual celebration of the achievements of female athletes. NGWSD began in 1987 in dedication of Flo Hyman, an Olympic volleyball player, known for promoting equality for women’s sports. NGWSD is annually celebrated across the country with community events and award ceremonies that honor female athletes. In addition to recognition of current achievements in women’s sports, NGWSD also strives to instill a passion for sports in youth that will last a lifetime.
How does UCI Athletics honor NGWSD?
To honor National Girls and Women in Sports Day, each year UC Irvine invites youth from the community to participate in a free fitness clinic hosted by UCI student athletes and coaches. The day is filled with a variety of sport-specific clinics and concludes with free admission for participants and their families to the UC Irvine Women’s Basketball game versus Long Beach State at 2:00pm in the Bren Events Center.
